Quai Network x402 Work Launches for Proof-of-Work AI Agent Micropayments
Quai Network introduced x402 Work, an HTTP 402-based payment scheme that uses proof-of-work puzzles for per-request micropayments to AI services.
Quai Network launched x402 Work on October 28, 2026. The open standard revives the HTTP 402 Payment Required response and replaces wallet-based payments with on-device proof-of-work puzzles that AI agents solve to access services.
Mechanics of x402 Work Payments
Servers return an HTTP 402 response containing a small Quai mining job priced in expected guesses. Clients solve the puzzle using CPU, GPU or ASIC hardware and resubmit the request with the solution in standard x402 headers. Servers verify the work and deliver the response without requiring accounts, keys or funding steps.

The scheme supports multiple algorithms including SHA-256d, KawPoW and Scrypt, plus profiles for other networks such as Monero RandomX. It operates through the x402.qu.ai facilitator and marketplace, where early traffic showed hundreds of completed work payments shortly after launch.
Because each request stands alone, the flow suits autonomous AI agents that cannot maintain persistent credentials. Sellers receive payment immediately upon verification, and occasional solutions may also yield Quai block rewards.
Hashference Service and Early Adoption
Hashference became the first live service to accept x402 Work on the same day. The platform offers access to more than 45 models from providers including Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek, Kimi, Qwen, GLM, Grok, Llama, Mistral and Gemma through OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible endpoints.
Users can pay per request with solved work, mine credits via Stratum, top up with QUAI, Qi or stablecoins, or subscribe through staking plans. The service includes an MCP server and integrates with tools such as Claude Code and Cursor.
The x402.qu.ai site hosts the marketplace, documentation and live statistics. Initial listings included five services, with Hashference as the primary AI endpoint. The standard remains open through GitHub proposals for further profiles and implementations.
Context Within Quai Network Design
Quai Network uses a sharded proof-of-work architecture with merged mining, five-second blocks and separate QUAI and Qi tokens. The design supports solo mining on consumer hardware, which aligns with the goal of letting individual agents perform the required work without intermediaries.
Developers at Dominant Strategies built x402 Work to address machine-to-machine payments where traditional onboarding creates friction. The approach removes human permission steps and keeps requests private by avoiding address linkage.
Future expansion depends on additional services adopting the standard and continued growth of the Quai ecosystem, including liquidity tools and developer integrations. No specific timelines beyond the October 28 launch have been announced.
Frequently asked questions
How does x402 Work differ from wallet-based payments?
x402 Work replaces accounts and funding with per-request proof-of-work puzzles that clients solve on-device. Servers verify the solution and respond without storing addresses or requiring deposits.
Which hardware can solve x402 Work puzzles?
The scheme supports CPU, GPU and ASIC hardware through SHA-256d, KawPoW and Scrypt profiles, with additional profiles available for other proof-of-work algorithms such as RandomX.
What services currently accept x402 Work?
Hashference launched as the first service on October 28, 2026, providing access to over 45 AI models. The x402.qu.ai marketplace lists additional early adopters and usage statistics.
Can AI agents use x402 Work without human intervention?
Yes. Each request is independent and requires only a single solved puzzle, allowing agents to pay for services without maintaining keys, accounts or ongoing permissions.
