HSBC launched its RedCoin HKD stablecoin on the PayMe app on 23 October 2026. The move marks the first consumer-facing rollout of a fully licensed Hong Kong stablecoin under the Stablecoins Ordinance.

PayMe Integration and User Access

More than 3.3 million PayMe users can activate an in-app stablecoin wallet in the coming days. No new account or minimum balance is required. The wallet supports instant P2P transfers to friends and family and payments at more than 100,000 merchants that already accept PayMe.

Users interact through the existing PayMe interface. Transfers settle immediately within the closed-loop system. HSBC Digital Assets Custody holds the assets. RedCoin is not covered by Hong Kong’s Deposit Protection Scheme.

Launch promotions include transaction discounts and RewardCash incentives. The phased rollout limits initial use to PayMe’s existing merchant and P2P network.

Regulatory Framework and Reserves

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation issued RedCoin under HKMA licence FRS02, one of two licences granted in April 2026. The token maintains a 1:1 peg to the Hong Kong dollar and is backed by segregated cash reserves held separately from bank assets.

As of 23 October 2026, approximately HK$80.58 million of RedCoin was in circulation against HK$81.58 million in reserves. Independent attestations of reserves are scheduled to begin after the fourth quarter of 2026.

HSBC built RedCoin on its own distributed ledger technology platform using smart contracts. The network remains closed within HSBC applications for now, with no external wallet transfers available at launch.

Expansion Plans and Market Context

HSBC plans to add the stablecoin wallet to its Hong Kong mobile banking app later in 2026. Additional features will allow subscriptions to tokenized investment products, starting with a new share class of an HSBC HKD money market fund that carries a minimum investment of roughly HK$100.

The launch follows HSBC participation in HKMA pilots including e-HKD+ and Project Ensemble since 2022. Earlier tokenized products from the bank include HSBC Orion digital bonds and the HSBC Gold Token. A pre-launch internal test with about 100 staff members validated minting, wallet activation, and transfer flows.

Hong Kong continues to develop its regulatory framework for digital assets. The Stablecoins Ordinance took effect in August 2025. RedCoin’s rollout adds a regulated retail option to the market while wholesale and institutional use cases remain under development.
